Album Review: Till Death & Back by Against The Current

Album artwork for Till Death & Back by Against The Current

“Till Death & Back” definitely describes this new LP from Against The Current perfectly, there is nothing that hasn't been learnt from over a 15 year career that has been left behind in the creation of this album. Legacy and new fans alike will adore and talk about this album for years to come. “Till Death & Back” will have you banging your head whilst feeling the long spectrum of emotion that Against The Current are known for exercising within their lyricism and melody.

Against The Current is one of the biggest names within the alt scene, having been established in Poughkeepsie, New York in 2011. As of 2026, the band consists of Chrissy Costanza (Vocals), Dan Gow (Guitarist), and Will Ferri (Drums). They have to this day amassed 4 million monthly listeners on spotify, released 4 EPs, and 4 LPs. They quickly rose to fame by releasing covers on YouTube and found their global audience with a collaboration with Riot Games for the song, Legends Never Die.

“Till Death & Back” starts off with a foot stomping anthem, Fortune Favors The Brave. It is a tale of being brave and relentless in the face of disbelief and doubt. There is a sense that within this track, that feeling of being free is present and nothing to hold Against The Current from creating what can only be described as a swan song to that moment of relief when you break away from something that is holding you back. This could refer to the fact that this is Against The Current’s first major release since going independent in 2021 right before their EP “Fever” dropped. This new era has given them the ability to fulfil their creative desire and the freedom that shows within Fortune Favors The Brave. It is their strongest album opener to date and sets the precedent for what follows. Fortune Favors The Brave will satisfy new and old listeners alike while delivering the statement that this is Against The Current now and forever. This message is strong and felt throughout the rest of the album as well.

A few songs down the line, we come to The Moth and everything about it speaks that it is truly an Against The Current track. Taking inspiration from previous songs such as Running With The Wild Things, The Moth brings the idea of getting a taste of freedom and the want, or rather, the need to chase it. The Moth establishes the concept that there is hope for the lost and lonely. Against The Current have never shied away from the message that everyone deserves to be free from any sort of oppression, hatred, and self doubt. Due to this, The Moth is inspiring and emotionally aspiring.  “I don’t know why I need it, but I still do.” talks about needing more and wanting more from life. This in turn, allows the song to do just that, be a conduit for that want. The Moth will have you wanting to jump around feeling hopeful and alive whilst making you tear up for all the right reasons.

Track eight, Protégé, takes centre stage. Being the last single prior to the release of the album, Protégé offers yet another glimpse into this overall narrative of a hero’s journey which this album heralds. Protégé is similar and familiar to those who prefer Against The Current’s heavier anthems. Protégé talks about rebirth and bringing yourself back to full once again only to be used as a tool by others for their misdeeds. “I’m the weapon you wanted, the blood is on my hands.” which is quickly followed by the chorus lines of, “Shape me and sharpen me.” really sells this idea and will make you want to sing along more than most of the songs on this album. The jump between low and high notes from Chrissy’s vocal alongside the in and out of the backing rhythms conducted by the rest of the band give the chorus a rollercoaster type effect. There is constant rocking motion within the sound of this track and it works so well in the scope of it. Altogether, it helps solidify that this track is nothing short of a banger and one that must not be overlooked in the grand scheme of this album.

To end off what has been a glorious 30 mins, we come to the finale that is the title track Till Death & Back. Till Death & Back talks about losing and finding a significant other through many timelines including in this case; till death and back again. There is a heavenly feel to this song especially with how it starts out, there are low synths and guitars that really give this impression. “I can find you with my eyes closed, in the dead of night.” gives the impression that Chrissy is speaking from a personal place of love and appreciation within this track for someone. “And there you are, I would crawl through hell, there is nothing else I would do.” will make you think of someone that you would do the same for. There is a concept within this song that is for those who feel love and would go to hell and back for someone, it's a type of reckless devotion that only those with a full heart would have. Till Death & Back is such a perfect album closer that fans will want to relive the whole hero’s journey across this album over and over again.

Overall, “Till Death & Back” is a concept album about rebirth, love and loss and the journey to find love again. What Against The Current have managed to compile here is a true testament to what they have done over the course of their career and it is an indicator that things will only go up from here on out.
